“What if I don’t get a faculty position & I have to leave academia?”
This is EVERY postdoc’s first question, and fair enough! You wouldn’t be here if you had 100 faculty offers in Boston. So let’s be honest – your academic job hunt may not be on track for you to get a faculty position in the city (or even country) where you want to live BEFORE you die of old age.
We don’t know the answer to that until we collect the data – and that’s what the first week is for! You bring your scientific accomplishments, I’ll bring my data analysis methods & we’ll create a realistic Plan A (your academic position) and Plan B (what the fuck to do if Plan A doesn’t work out) so you have a search strategy that will actually WORK.
And look, it’s not the end of the world if your faculty search is off track. I see this problem enough that I’ve created a micro-course specifically to help you get it back on track – which you get as a FREE bonus inside the course!
That said, here are some facts:

Time is the FIRST thing we’ll cover. As my sister says, “if you have time then you don’t have money, if you have money then you don’t have time – NGO founders [& postdocs, I’d like to add!] are the only people who don’t have either. But we have something that matters even more – a job we love.”
At this stage in your career, I know time & money are harder to find than the Higgs boson & Module 1 is specifically designed to deal with that issue.
That said, here are some more facts:
1) The acceleration of gravity on the surface of the earth at sea level is 9.8 m/s2
2) You currently have 24 hrs/day – but the earth’s rotation is decreasing so you’re getting an additional 2.3 ms/day/century (spend it well)
3) 40% of scientists (including me) become unemployed when their contract ends because they have no clue what they want to do next – and they have time (but they don’t have money)

Sounds like a load of bullshit to me – but let’s assume for a sec that you’re right & you have the data to prove it. (You published one paper in Physical Review Letters E during your PhD 20 years ago – and since then you’ve been watching Netflix & living off your cat’s million-dollar trust fund.)
Look, if you TRULY don’t have enough papers & that’s a fact, it’s STILL a solvable problem – put down the Nutella jar & let’s get on it. We’ll get you a second postdoc to pay the bills while you get that first paper out.
That said, here’s yet another fact:
I’ve never had a client who didn’t have the publication record & translational skills to find a job within their network.

Will my university reimburse the course fee?
Yes, most universities have a budget to help you find your next job, which you can use to pay the course fee. In the US, this “professional transition scholarship” is funded by your department. In the UK, this “redundancy payment” is funded by your research institute (and is only available to postdocs who finish their contract). In NL, this “transition payment” (“transitievergoeding” in Dutch) is funded by your faculty. The amount is determined by your salary & the length of your contract, and there is a calculator (only available in Dutch) on the government’s website.
What if my contact is ending soon & I can’t afford the course fee?
I recommend getting a second postdoc because
1. You can’t network in the 2 weeks before your contract ends, and
2. Applying for jobs when you’re desperate to pay the bills is stressful & doesn’t work that well. Taking the course now is like frantically making your parachute 2 min before you’re gonna jump out of the plane.
Fear can kill your confidence, destroy your motivation, harm your interviews & damage your negotiations. This is both my personal experience looking for jobs as a physicist & my professional experience as a career coach for scientists. You’re welcome to enroll in the course anyway, but our first stop is to get you in a plan to cover your living expenses so fear isn’t flying the plane.

Yes, you’re in the perfect position to start your job search! Congratulations on planning ahead now to avoid stress later – I wish I could go back in time & do that too!
Can I take the course if I just started my PhD?
An effective job search strategy is based on a rock-solid understanding of your scientific achievements & professional preferences, so I'd recommend taking the course 1-2 years into your PhD — I don't want you to invest in writing your application & expanding your network, only to have your plans change completely! That said, if you already have a strong publication record & expect your PhD early (so NOT like the 7 years it took me!), you’re welcome to join the course!
What if I’m sick & tired of my job hunt & I want to throw money at the problem to make it go away?
The goal of this course is the job of your dreams – but you can’t get results if you don’t go to the lab & actually do the experiments. I’ll take you step-by-step, I’ll teach you every secret, I’ll give you every shortcut – I’ll show up & do my best to get you the results you came for. But I can’t do your push-ups for you & I can’t do your job interviews for you either.
